Scottish Terrier Puppies: Understanding its Behavior and Dealing with It

Scottish terrier puppies are adorable because they are small and spunky. They are lovely dogs because they are devoted to their masters and it is essential that you know how to care for them to reward their loyalty.

Understanding the behavior of a Scottish terrier puppy is necessary if you want to have a great lasting relationship with your pet.

First off, the Scottish terrier loves to nip and bite things. You need to train your puppy as early as possible to correct this behavior. It takes patience to housebreak this breed but everything should come to place if you executed the training properly.

You need to have a firm hand in dealing with this puppy or it can become bossy.

However, being firm does not mean yelling and giving physical punishment. Yelling at a Scottish terrier puppy will make it a sad dog, spending most of its time sulking in a corner.

Scottish terrier puppies are also serious chewers. You need to prepare a substantial amount of money to buy chewing toys for this dog breed.

These puppies will chew your house down if they can but do not despair. The good news is that these puppies will stop chewing things after their first year.

The second thing you need to know about Scottish terrier puppies is that they like to dig. Even if your dog is a Scottish terrier mix, this same trait will surface and you need to get used to it or address it.

Your puppies are likely to destroy your landscape or dig in your sofa. To address this, your puppy needs to have exercises so this energy is redirected to something else.

Make sure you get the puppy exhausted from playing so it will not start this behavior. If you do not have the time to play with it but you have a backyard, you can segregate an area in your backyard where your puppy can dig to its heart’s content.

Another thing you need to know is that Scottish terrier puppies are independent. Unlike other breeds, the Scottish terrier will not stay on your side all the time. This is not to say that your puppy will not spend time with you.

Even a puppy with a Scottish terrier mix is playful and will still ask you to play with it. However, it is not the type that will sit on your side; it will do things on its own most of the times.

Lastly, and probably one good thing about the breed, is that it does not need high maintenance grooming. The dog has a short coat but you need to groom it at least twice a week.

The grooming part should be easy because you just need to brush it for a few minutes and remove dead hair. It does not shed a lot so your house should stay squeaky clean of hair.

The reason you need to groom it is because it consistently licks its coat and it may swallow dead or loose hair which can make it sick. This hair will turn into a hairball in its stomach and may cause it to throw up.

Now that you know the characteristics of a Scottish terrier puppy, you can decide whether this is the right breed for you. The puppy will be a great companion or playmate to your kids and household but it can also pose serious problems due to its destructive behavior.

There are ways in which you can correct the behavior but it will need much attention during the first year. And lastly, puppies of this breed will get jealous if there is a new baby in the house.

This is another issue that you need to deal with but for now, decide first whether you want a Scottie or not.
